“I am a human being who is a psychotherapist, which gives me the extraordinary privilege of being with other human beings in their most messy and complex experiences of themselves. I share this potential to be messy and complex, and I have my own life experiences that have contributed to this potential. Being a psychotherapist gives me insight into these experiences and an understanding of what might impact them in ways that are helpful; it does not make me more or less of a human being than the person sitting in front of me, nor does it make me an expert on who they are or what they need. Being a human being who is a psychotherapist is an experience of dignity and autonomy for clients, and for myself.”
